Course description

The Temporomandibular Joint: Assessment and Treatment course is designed to bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice in the management of  temporomandibular (TMJ) and orofacial pain disorders. Participants will develop a structured, systematic approach to TMJ assessment, enabling them to differentiate between joint-related, muscular, cervical, and centrally mediated sources of pain.

The course covers detailed TMJ anatomy and biomechanics, common pain mechanisms, and classification of TMJ disorders. Emphasis is placed on history taking, observation, palpation, movement analysis, and special tests, as well as identifying red flags and referral indications.

On the treatment side, learners will explore evidence-informed interventions including patient education, manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription, motor control strategies, and integration of cervical spine management. The course also addresses the biopsychosocial contributors to TMJ pain and how to communicate findings and treatment plans effectively to patients.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently assess TMJ conditions, formulate clinical hypotheses, and design individualized, rational treatment plans applicable to everyday clinical practice.
